This is what you can expect

DMT GmbH & Co. KG (Germany) is part of the three-year Horizon Europe project “MaDiTraCe – Material and digital traceability for the certification of critical raw materials” that will start by the end of 2022. The international project team consists of universities, institutes and independent consulting companies. Within the project, DMT focuses on the development of CERA (Certification of Raw Materials) 4in1, which is a standardised certification scheme for mineral raw materials. The CERA 4in1 system will ensure environmental, social and economic responsibility within the value chain of mineral raw materials from the exploration to the refining and manufacturing to the final product. Furthermore, it focuses on the traceability of certified materials by using a combination of traceability technologies (chemical and digital) and accounting methods.
The CERA 4in1 certification system consists of four sub-standards that look at different yet interrelated aspects. One of these standards – the so-called CERA 4in1 Chain of Custody Standard (CCS) – refers to the specific outputs during the steps in the value chain from mining to the final product. The CCS aims to provide criteria for appropriate management systems for a complete traceability that guarantees a chain of custody of sustainable sourced raw materials.

The PhD position covers the development of the CCS structure and systematics. The focus will be on the standard development, its compatibility with chemical and digital traceability methods and other Chain of Custody standards as well as the alignment with legislation. In this position you will spend half of your time on your PhD thesis and the other half working for DMT. The PhD position begins on 1 January 2023 and is based on a fixed-term contract for the duration of the project, until the end of 2025. An extension may be possible. Required working languages are English and German.

This is what we expect

  • Completed master's degree in the field of mining/ raw materials/ IT or MBA
  • Relevant experience in mineral commodity / product certification, exploration and reservoir science.
  • Completed Master's degree in the field of mining, raw materials, IT or MBA
  • Knowledge of value chains of mineral raw materials starting from the exploitation through manufacture to the final product
  • Knowledge of sustainability in mining
  • Familiarity with accounting methods and digital traceability (e.g. battery passport)
  • Knowledge of traceability methods of mineral raw materials
  • Knowledge of analytical fingerprinting (chemical traceability)
  • The ability to improvise to achieve objectives with minimal supervision
  • Good communication skills both spoken and written
