DMT GmbH & Co. KG (Germany) is part of the three-year Horizon Europe project “MaDiTraCe – Material and digital traceability for the certification of critical raw materials” that will start by the end of 2022. The international project team consists of universities, institutes and independent consulting companies. Within the project DMT focuses on the development of “CERA 4in1 – Certification of Raw Materials”, which is a standardized certification scheme for mineral raw materials. The CERA 4in1 system will ensure environmental, social and economic responsibility within the value chain of mineral raw materials from the exploration to refining and manufacturing until the final product. Furthermore, it focuses on the traceability of certified materials by using a combination of traceability technologies (chemical and digital) and accounting methods. The CERA 4in1 certification system consists of four sub-standards that look at different aspects but build on each other. One of the standards – the so-called CERA 4in1 Readiness Standard (CRS) – certifies the reports within the (pre-)investment phase, e.g. feasibility study. It defines binding sustainability criteria to be considered before the operating phase. Another standard – the so-called CERA 4in1 Final Product Standard (CFS) – sets out criteria for certification of consumer goods. It enables informed decision-making by consumers with a product label that indicates the assignment of the standard.

This PhD position covers he development of the CRS and CFS structure and systematics. The focus will be on the standard developments, the compatibility with other mineral resource reporting schemes and product certificates as well as the alignment with legislation. This is a “half-doctoral” position, in which you will spend half of your time on your PhD and the other half working for DMT. It will start on 1 January 2023 and will end with the project at the end of 2025 (it may be possible to extend the contract). Project languages will be English and German.
