The country manager of TÜV Middle East in Bahrain, Godly George (centre left), handed over the certificate to His Highness Sheikh Nasser (centre right), Minister for Youth and Sports Affairs at the Ministry of Youth & Sports in Bahrain. This achievement marks the new-found capability of TÜV Middle East to diversify into new domains of the certification business in the region in line with the strategy of our Management System Department in the Middle East.

TÜV Middle East has certified the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Bahrain in accordance with the ISO 20121 standard. “This is the first time we have issued this certificate in the Middle East,” says TÜV Middle East Vice-President Manoj Shetty.

ISO 20121 is a management system standard that has been designed to help organizations in the events industry improve the sustainability of their event-related activities, products and services. The standard is based on the earlier British Standard “BS 8901 Specification for a Sustainability Management System for Events” which was first developed in 2007. Due to the high level interest in BS 8901, the decision was made to create an international version of the standard to coincide with the London 2012 Olympics. ISO 20121 applies to all types and sizes of organization involved in the events industry – from caterers, lighting and sound engineers, security companies, stage builders and venues, through to independent event organizers and corporate and public sector event teams.

In the wake of this success, the next move of TÜV Middle East will be to explain to major event management companies in the region the advantages of having their sustainability management systems certified by the company.
