Hanover: Production is becoming increasingly digital, and the networking of products and machines continues apace. It is no longer just the case that people need protection from machines: the reverse is now also true. This is one of the key issues for the TÜV NORD GROUP at this year’s Hannover Messe.
The two major areas of security and safety are thus being brought together: Data security and integrity on the one hand, and the functional safety of production equipment and systems on the other. TÜV NORD is combining these services under the name of “Security4Safety” to offer an integrated risk analysis for many different areas of application, including:
• Safety-related components with an Internet interface, such as sensors, control systems and drive components,
• Web-enabled toys, household appliances and smart home applications,
• Cars, railway vehicles, aircraft and ships,
• Waterworks, networks and power plants,
• Medical devices and pharmaceutical products.
Integrated analysis and evaluation
The Security4Safety risk analysis consists of two modules: In the first module, a status and risk analysis is performed on the basis of sector-specific directives and standards, such as IEC 62443-3-2 for industrial security or IEC 61508 for functional safety. On this basis, TÜV NORD experts generate a detailed report on current security vulnerabilities in the products or processes. Customers can use this report to work out appropriate measures to eliminate the risks. In the second module, the effectiveness of the implementation of the measures and the elimination of any vulnerabilities that have been identified is assessed.
Demonstrating readiness for Industry 4.0
Most companies start with a Security4Safety risk analysis of their components or products before extending it to their organisational processes. If the assessment returns a positive result, the company can be certified in accordance with IEC 62443. It is in this way, in tandem with certification in accordance with ISO 27001, that companies demonstrate the readiness for Industry 4.0 of their organisation. This level of maturity indicates that a company is in compliance with the current state of the art in the security field and has met its due diligence obligations in respect of the market launch of secure products at all levels of processes, systems and components.
