For the second time, a delegation from Korea’s largest energy provider, Kepco, has visited TÜViT in Essen. In their quest for information, the guests focused on the German and European smart metering system. The discussions also turned to ways in which electronic measuring devices with communications capability can be protected from unauthorised access.
Also in attendance were representatives of meter operator Innogy Metering, a client of TÜViT. Frank Beuting, Director of IT security at TÜViT, and his experts offered an overview of the current security requirements on smart-meter gateways, the focal point of the intelligent measuring system, and the infrastructure into which these gateways are embedded.
TÜViT collaborates with Innogy in the field of security management systems and, on behalf of the German Federal Office for Security in Information Technology (BSI), is developing the protection profiles for smart-meter components and the technical guidelines for the entire smart-meter system, which will be introduced in Germany from 2018.
The Korean delegation also visited the software laboratory at the Langemarckstrasse site. There, the TÜViT experts presented the Transport Layer Security test tool, which has been developed in house and is used to analyse the communication protocols of smart-meter gateways. Frank Beuting: “Kepco is very interested in our activities in this field and wants to stay in close contact with us.”
