TÜV NORD has become the first certifier to be involved in supporting the approval process for the German market for locomotives built by a Chinese manufacturer. Deutsche Bahn is going to be using shunting locomotives from CRRC in the rapid transit rail network in the Hamburg region.

Deutsche Bahn has ordered two shunting locomotives of same design from the world’s largest manufacturer of locomotives, CRRC. These are being manufactured in the Chinese city of Zhuzhou and are scheduled for delivery by June 2019. However, before the vehicles can go into operation, European and German law dictates that one of them must be subjected to an authorisation procedure run by the German Federal Railway Authority. In this context, CRRC has commissioned TÜV NORD Luxembourg and TÜV NORD Systems with the execution of the necessary conformity assessments based on the European and German requirements. TÜV NORD Luxembourg will act as a notified body (NoBo) and take responsibility for the conformity assessment at the European level. As a designated body (DeBo), TÜV NORD Systems will carry out the conformity assessment at the level of German law. TÜV NORD Luxembourg will also be participating in various tests and trial runs which will take place in China and on the railway network of Deutsche Bahn in Germany.
