“Import strategy is an important step towards a sustainable and future-oriented hydrogen economy”

Energy & Resources: TÜV NORD energy expert Silvio Konrad classifies the German government's new import strategy.

Germany will need large quantities of hydrogen in the future to become climate-neutral. A large proportion of the hydrogen required is to be imported. To this end, the German government has now presented its import strategy. It complements the existing hydrogen strategy. TÜV NORD energy expert Silvio Konrad assesses the situation:

“The import strategy is an important step towards a sustainable and future-oriented hydrogen economy. It shows a clear commitment to the promotion of sustainable hydrogen, but does not lose sight of the importance of a rapid market ramp-up. It is important and necessary that the import strategy emphasizes the importance of sustainability and technical feasibility as a framework for action. It is also about the integration of existing infrastructure and the development of new infrastructure. With the import strategy, the German government is placing a clear focus on promoting reliable partnerships with the relevant providers abroad. The planned funding measures to implement the import strategy take into account the necessary steps to minimize risk, as we are also entering new territory to a certain extent. The funding instruments must be further developed; it is also necessary to create additional framework conditions in the regulatory area.”
