Certification
TÜV NORD has been provisionally recognised by the Federal Environment Agency to certify renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO). This concerns the certification of green hydrogen and its derivatives according to the ISCC EU standard. TÜV NORD has been a recognised certification body for renewable fuels in accordance with the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) for many years.
Sustainable fuels play a decisive role in the energy transition. They are important for reducing harmful emissions and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. In addition to fuels made from sustainable biomass, in particular plants grown for this purpose or residual and waste materials with biogenic components, fuels with components of non-biological origin are now also being developed. Their advantage is that they do not require any agricultural land and therefore do not compete with food production. RFNBOs are produced through the use of green hydrogen, i.e. the electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable sources. The power-to-liquid or power-to-gas process can be used to produce sustainable fuels.
Greenhouse gas reduction can only be recognised if the production and supply chain is certified in accordance with RED regulations. The origin and sustainability of hydrogen production must be reliably documented. This requires tested standards and recognised certification bodies. These must be recognised by the Federal Environment Agency in Germany.
The ISCC EU certification system aims to prove the sustainability of fuels from biomass - and now also of electricity-based fuels - along the entire supply chain.
