Satellites are essential for modern technologies such as Earth observation, telecommunications, and navigation. However, the increasing amount of space debris poses a threat to these systems. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), 130 million debris pieces larger than one millimeter orbit the Earth, increasing the risk for active satellites. The number of launched satellites has significantly increased in recent years, exacerbating the situation. TÜV NORD GROUP, along with its subsidiary ALTER, has joined the Zero Debris Initiative to promote safety and sustainability in space. This initiative, launched by ESA, aims to create a debris-free orbital environment by 2030.

ALTER contributes its expertise in highly reliable testing and qualifications to support the ambitious goals of the initiative. The company offers comprehensive testing and qualification services for electronic components and systems used in space. These services are crucial to ensure that components withstand the extreme conditions of space, such as severe temperature fluctuations, launch vibrations, or radiation, and function reliably.

"Participating in the Zero Debris Initiative underscores our commitment to responsible space operations," says Rafael Rodriguez, Equipment Conformity Director at ALTER. "We are proud to be part of a global community dedicated to safety and sustainability in space. Our work at ALTER helps prevent the release of debris", Rodriguez continues.

The Zero Debris Charter, developed by ESA and 40 space industry stakeholders, includes both high-level guiding principles and specific, jointly defined goals to achieve zero debris by 2030.
