Refrigeration, air-conditioning and ventilation equipment using propane as a refrigerant can be tested by TÜV NORD to ensure a practical assessment of energy efficiency and product safety.

In the heat pump, refrigeration and air-conditioning industry, propane is becoming increasingly important as a natural refrigerant. Its outstanding thermodynamic properties, climate neutrality and the absence of halogenated substances make it the preferred choice. This development raises two key questions: How powerful and energy-efficient are these systems in reality? And how safe are they in terms of fire safety? To answer these questions, TÜV NORD offers manufacturers a comprehensive testing service that provides both performance and fire safety testing for systems using propane as a refrigerant, all from a single source. The tests are carried out in specialised centres of expertise for refrigeration, air conditioning and ventilation technology, as well as fire safety, to ensure a well-founded and practical assessment of energy efficiency and product safety.
The risks investigated include the analysis of leaks, the formation of flammable atmospheres and the identification of potential ignition sources. In addition, full-scale tests can be carried out in which leaks are simulated and controlled ignition is triggered. These worst-case scenarios provide important insights into system stability, for example with regard to flying debris and structural integrity. The behaviour of the devices when exposed to external fire is also part of the test programme – a crucial aspect for product liability and for the protection of emergency and rescue personnel. Rising pressure in the refrigeration circuit and possible sudden releases of propane are documented under laboratory conditions and form a robust basis for design optimisations.
The performance tests focus on the thermodynamic properties of the units. The units are tested in climate chambers under realistic conditions and a range of environmental parameters. The results provide manufacturers with reliable data for their product catalogues and valuable insights for product optimisation. The portfolio also includes safety tests that document and evaluate the units’ behaviour in the event of a power failure or a failure of the circulation pumps. The test results can be used for the EHPA seal of approval and HP Keymark certification, enabling manufacturers to effectively demonstrate the high quality and efficiency of their products on the market.
“For several years now, we have been conducting an increasing number of tests on systems using propane as a refrigerant. Technically, propane is very manageable – yet the demand for robust fire safety assessments is growing significantly,” explains Timo Reisner, who is responsible for technical management and development at TÜV NORD’s heat pumps, refrigeration and air conditioning systems laboratory. Sales manager Peter Kirchhausen adds: “With our test and investigation reports, we provide manufacturers with reliable answers to fire safety questions relating to highly flammable refrigerants.”
With successfully completed performance and fire safety tests, manufacturers can not only demonstrate the safety of their products, but also prove responsible conduct, regulatory compliance and innovative expertise. On request, noise measurements can also be integrated – ensuring efficient testing of all relevant product requirements.
