Company: New “green” office building for 200 employees inaugurated in Dortmund.
With its new location in Dortmund, TÜV NORD is sending out a clear signal for Dortmund as a business location: Today (Friday, September 20), the new office building in the Business Park Dortmund, Phoenix West, was inaugurated in the presence of the North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of Construction, Ina Scharrenbach, and the Lord Mayor of the City of Dortmund, Thomas Westphal.
TÜV NORD has built a modern office building to the latest energy standards on the almost 6,000 square meter site at a cost of around 21 million euros. On a net floor area of around 5,000 square meters, the new site offers innovative workplaces for around 200 employees and serves as a central hub for numerous TÜV NORD GROUP activities in the region.
Dr. Dirk Stenkamp, Chairman of the Board of Management of TÜV NORD AG, emphasized: “With our new Phoenix West site, we are demonstrating that we stand for growth, innovation and sustainability. From here, we want to drive forward pioneering projects, develop innovations and tackle the key issues of our time - the mobility and energy transition, digitalization and occupational health and safety - even more intensively; for the benefit of our customers.”
Ina Scharrenbach, Minister for Regional Identity, Communities and Local Government, Building and Digitalization of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, emphasized the importance of the new site for the region: “Phoenix West is a prime example of how old industrial sites in North Rhine-Westphalia are being revitalized and transformed into future-oriented areas. The new TÜV NORD site is an outstanding example of an attractive working environment - modern, sustainable and central. The TÜV NORD GROUP is making an important contribution to strengthening Dortmund and the Ruhr region as a business location and to creating high-quality jobs.”
Thomas Westphal, Lord Mayor of the City of Dortmund, added: “I am delighted that TÜV NORD is remaining loyal to Dortmund with this new building and will continue to support the citizens of our city with its expertise in the future. As a knowledge company, TÜV NORD has proven with its excellent choice of the Phoenix West innovation location that it wants to expand its activities in the fields of mobility, energy transition, hydrogen economy, medicine and digital transformation in the best possible environment.”
With the opening of the Phoenix West site, the TÜV NORD GROUP is continuing its strategy of developing services that are directly tailored to people's needs and the requirements of a changing world. This includes certifications for climate-neutral products as well as the expertise of employees for the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy.
The building in Dortmund's Phoenix West business park is connected to the city of Dortmund's district heating network. Photovoltaic systems on the roof of the building and above parts of the parking spaces will supply around 130,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year for the company's own use and for charging electric vehicles; several of the 130 available parking spaces will be equipped with charging facilities.

Thanks to modern office concepts, the new four-storey, U-shaped building requires less space than traditional office properties and offers space reserves for additional employees at the site. Employees from the areas of system testing, certification, occupational medicine and driving license testing will move in: theoretical examinations will take place here in future, and most practical examinations will also begin here.
The new building will bring together the previous locations in Dortmund (Berliner Straße) and Hagen (Feithstraße). It had become necessary because renovating the old properties in Dortmund and Hagen would only have been possible at great financial expense. The former buildings have now been sold.
The new building was planned by the architects from the agn team in Hamburg, whose design was the winner of an architectural competition.
Examples from our daily work
In Dortmund and Hagen, an average of seven inspectors carry out around 14,300 theoretical and 13,700 practical driving tests per year. In car dealerships, garages and our own test centers, 25 inspectors carry out over 52,000 general vehicle inspections every year. In Dortmund and Hagen, around 14,000 elevator inspections are coordinated for the region every year; 32 engineers currently work in this business area at both locations. The occupational health service provider MEDITÜV recorded around 4,000 occupational health examinations and vaccinations from the Hagen site in 2023. Doctors and psychologists carried out over 600 medical-psychological examinations in Dortmund and Hagen last year.
Technical monitoring has existed in Dortmund for 125 years
The roots of technical monitoring in Dortmund go back to 1900, when six engineers founded the Dortmund Steam Boiler Monitoring Association. In the same year, the DÜV Hagen and DÜV der Zechen im Oberbergamtsbezirk Dortmund zu Essen (Zechenverein) were founded. In 1938, DÜV Dortmund, DÜV Hagen, parts of the Zechenverein and other steam boiler monitoring associations merged to form TÜV Essen, later RWTÜV, which merged with TÜV Hannover/Sachsen-Anhalt and TÜV Nord in 2004 to form today's TÜV NORD GROUP.
