Carbon Cycle

Carbon Management

There is a scientific and political consensus that a significant reduction in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, as well as the prevention of further CO₂ emissions, are absolutely essential to halt irreversible processes in global warming.

Globally, there are already a wide range of efforts underway to prevent carbon dioxide emissions. Nevertheless, there will always be unavoidable new CO₂ releases. The process of managing these releases and the excess CO₂ in the atmosphere is known as carbon management. It describes the entire cycle of capture, transport, reuse (CCU—Carbon Capture and Utilization), and permanent storage of carbon dioxide (CCS—Carbon Capture and Storage). Carbon management plays a crucial role in global efforts toward decarbonization and the mitigation of negative climate impacts.

At the same time, carbon management represents a powerful opportunity for innovation and growth: as a driver of new business in plant and infrastructure construction, as well as a climate protection measure that makes a significant contribution to security, stability, and prosperity on our planet. It is therefore a key issue for companies that are committed to their own and statutory sustainability goals and want to set the course early on. With the right knowledge and appropriate measures, CO₂ can not only be managed but also harnessed to one’s own advantage.

The TÜV NORD GROUP views carbon management as an essential component of addressing climate change—an issue that encompasses not only technological solutions but also political, economic, and social aspects.

The DCMI (German Carbon Management Initiative), together with its member companies, represents the entire CO₂ value chain and pursues the shared vision of establishing carbon management as an effective climate protection tool. As a member, we actively help shape this vision and enrich it with innovative solutions and technological expertise. As part of a broad network, we aim to work together to create the framework for the effective and widely accepted use of CCS and CCU technologies in Germany.
