TÜV NORD is expanding its portfolio of services in the areas of sustainability and digital supply chains: the Group is one of the first companies able to provide support for the independent verification and certification of Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) in accordance with the specifications of the Catena-X ecosystem. Catena-X is the first collaborative data ecosystem for the automotive industry and enables the standardised exchange of data throughout the entire value chain.

As one of two recognised Catena-X PCF Attestation Providers, TÜV NORD is now able to certify the entire PCF management system and calculation processes (PCF Programme Certifications), verify individual PCF data sets (PCF Verifications) and issue the corresponding Catena-X attestations.

Demand for verified emissions data is rising against a backdrop of new regulatory requirements and the growing importance of sustainability information in supply chains. The automotive industry, in particular, faces the challenge of transparently verifying emissions not only within its own organisation but across multiple stages of the supply chain. To this end, Catena-X has created a standardised framework for the calculation, exchange and verification of Product Carbon Footprints. “It is no longer sufficient simply to collect CO₂ data; it must be robust and trustworthy so that the figures are comparable for OEMs and suppliers. “With our accreditation as a Catena-X Attestation Provider, we support our customers in presenting their CO₂ data transparently and credibly, thereby creating comparable figures,” explains Dennis Nowroth of TÜV NORD, who, together with Oliver Marzetz, has driven the development of the service through to market readiness.

Verified PCF data enhances credibility

The Product Carbon Footprint is increasingly becoming a key metric for procurement, sustainability management and regulatory compliance. It is no surprise that leading companies in the automotive industry, as well as other organisations in the value chain, have actively driven the development of Catena-X in order to operate efficiently. With industry-wide standardised rules, verified PCF data creates transparency and trust. Companies can demonstrate their carbon footprints to multiple customers and strengthen their position in tendering processes and supplier evaluations.

Catena-X builds on existing standards and supplements them with automotive-specific requirements. “The key foundations are ISO 14067 ‘Carbon Footprints of Products’, the Life Cycle Assessment standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, and the GHG Protocol Product Standard. TÜV NORD has many years of comprehensive expertise in all these standards. So we are well positioned,” says Dennis Nowroth.
