The TÜV NORD Power app “AI Assisted Auditing” impressed the jury of the Best of Technology Award and took first place in the “Corporate Inhouse Solution” category. The competition is organised by WirtschaftsWoche in collaboration with Capgemini, Fraunhofer ISI and KIT. By utilising artificial intelligence, the app makes the day-to-day work of TÜV NORD auditors in the fields of materials and welding technology easier. “With this Power App, we are digitising audit processes and boosting efficiency and quality worldwide and across all sites,” emphasises project manager Martin Kisch of TÜV NORD. In this way, the TÜV NORD GROUP is strengthening its position as a data-driven knowledge-based organisation.

Within just under a year, the app progressed from an initial idea to an international roll-out. Teams from various fields of activity were involved in the iterative development and implementation, and there was also a group of ten experts who, as test users, contributed their expertise to the project through their feedback.

The app now supports around a hundred specialists in their day-to-day work, as it is optimally tailored to their workflow. Instead of taking notes by hand during their inspections, the specialists can use their smartphone or laptop to make voice recordings. What’s more, the app recognises text in images, which makes it easier to capture details from, for example, type plates. PDF files can also be converted into text. Editing can be carried out across different devices. The app converts speech into text and provides text suggestions for the audit report, which is ultimately output directly as a PDF file in the company’s corporate design. To ensure the app can also be used in the Group’s international subsidiaries, it supports input in around 30 languages; reports are generated in English or German. All reports are stored in a database, so that previous documents can be used as a basis for new drafts. Mr. Kisch emphasises: “AI provides support, but humans always retain the final say in every step of the process.”

The app was developed for multi-standard audits in the fields of materials and welding technology. Around twenty standards have been incorporated for these activities. They form the basis for working with the app.

“Our solution is based on flexible AI components that we can adapt to technological advances at any time,” says Martin Kisch. “This award motivates us to further develop the app and add even more features.”
